My Review of Ouija: Origin of Evil

So I recently watched Ouija: Origin of Evil and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

In 1967 Los Angeles, widowed mother Alice Zander (played by Elizabeth Reaser) unwittingly invites authentic evil into her home by adding a new stunt to bolster her séance scam business. When the merciless spirit overtakes her youngest daughter Doris (played by Lulu Wilson), the small family must confront unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.

This film is surprisingly really great and somewhat scary. When the first film came out a lot of people rolled their eyes due to the fact that a film was being made on a Ouija board. Now while that seems like a crazy idea, there was a way for the first film to work if you didn't go the typical current horror film trend and that's exactly what it did. That film ended up being a pile of garbage and it would've been a surprise that a sequel was made, but the film made money and we have Ouija: Origin of Evil. This film didn't really have high expectations and that befitted in the best way possible as it was able to just be a normal horror film without trying too hard. It didn't take the current trend of horror films by introducing a bunch of dumb teenagers that have no earthly idea what they are doing and make the dumbest decisions possible. In order to not to that you have to develop the story first and give it purpose which is exactly happens in this film. It takes a relatively simple story and makes into a creative and crafty way to tell a story. It does a great job of just giving you a lot of details to explain why this board is so cursed and it has a purpose within the film. The characters in the film are often stupid, but they do make good decisions that help develop the film as well as themselves as characters in the film. There are a few good scares that make you jump out of your seat, but there are the obvious jump-scares that you can see from a mile way, but it just keeps the film unpredictable. Overall this film is a vast improvement over its predecessor and it makes for another great horror film in 2016. I give Ouija: Origin of Evil a 7 out of 10.
