So I recently watched Snowden and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado........
Disillusioned with the intelligence community, top contractor Edward Snowden (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) leaves his job at the National Security Agency. He now knows that a virtual mountain of data is being assembled to track all forms of digital communication -- not just from foreign governments and terrorist groups, but from ordinary Americans. When Snowden decides to leak this classified information, he becomes a traitor to some, a hero to others and a fugitive from the law.
This film is a pretty big disappointment. When Oliver Stone does something that involves politics or other big concerns he tends to not pull any punches and goes with his own beliefs on certain figures like JFK or George Bush and it's no different with Edward Snowden. In the film you do get the sense of a good guy feel from the film and you see how crazy this whole situation was and Stone goes with hero side instead of the villain side. Either way you look at Edward Snowden, there are some who love him and some who hate him and it's just based on your beliefs on whether or not you applaud him or shame him. The film does a great job of explaining his backstory and we get a lot of nice details that some people may not have known about him. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was the perfect choice to play Snowden and he does get the voice down fairly well. The rest of the performances are stellar as well, but JGL is the more centralized performance. The main problems with the film are that the leaning towards painting the hero picture of Snowden isn't fair and it doesn't show a lot of the consequences for his actions and you can't enjoy a film when it only agrees with one side and the other problem is the length and while Oliver Stone loves long films, he adds too many details and a few of the subplots felt forced and unnecessary to the film. It also explains the very well know details to the public more than they should've. Overall this film gives a lot of new insight to the life of Edward Snowden and it has unbelievable performances, but it's just so poorly executed and if you want to know more about Snowden, you should check out the documentary CitizenFour. I give Snowden a 5 out of 10.
So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Snowden, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
