My Review of The Magnificent Seven (2016)

So I recently watched The Magnificent Seven (2016) and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Magnificent Seven 2016.jpg

Looking to mine for gold, greedy industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgard) seizes control of the Old West town of Rose Creek. With their lives in jeopardy, Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett) and other desperate residents turn to bounty hunter Sam Chisolm (played by Denzel Washington) for help. Chisolm recruits an eclectic group of gunslingers to take on Bogue and his ruthless henchmen. With a deadly showdown on the horizon, the seven mercenaries soon find themselves fighting for more than just money once the bullets start to fly.

This film was a lot of fun. In today's Hollywood, remakes are commonplace and usually classics we as film goers love are the ones that often get remade and this is no different. The Magnificent Seven (1960) is just an all-time classic western film and even the film it is based off of (Seven Samurai) is one of the greatest films of all-time so this current film has a lot to live up to. Compared to those two films, this film is a lot of fun and while it doesn't have the story development, there is a lot of action and a lot of great characters to help the film move along. First off the cast is just absolutely tremendous and they all have their shining moments that make them standout and be unique. Denzel Washington just has so much fun in his role and it helps when you've got his friend Antoine Fuqua behind the camera.

Chris Pratt wasn't his usual self in this film and it was a nice change of pace to see him in a somewhat different role. However the true star of the film is Vincent D'Onofrio who is just as crazy as he usually is in his roles and he steals the film from the very moment you meet him. The action scenes are phenomenal and it makes you wonder why Fuqua doesn't make more of these types of films because it seems he has a handle on the genre. The film relies on good characters and the comedic timing of those characters and the jokes in the film are fabulous although some feel forced and unwanted. The story just feels like your everyday and unoriginal film that we've seen over and over again and it just didn't feel fresh. Overall this is a fun time at the movies and although it wasn't a home run film, it's a film to help the western genre get back on track. I give The Magnificent Seven (2016) an 8 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of The Magnificent Seven (2016), what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

9-26-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Paramount Pictures announced today that it, in association with Fabrica de Cine and Ai Films, will open Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated latest feature film, Silence, in limited release on December 23. Silence will then receive a wide release in January 2017. Scorsese, who worked closely with Fabrica de Cine’s Gaston Pavlovich on the making of the film, wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York), based on the book Silence by Shusaku Endo. The film is produced by Scorsese and Emma Tillinger Koskoff (The Wolf of Wall Street), along with Randall Emmett (Lone Survivor), Barbara Defina (Goodfellas), Vittorio Cecchi Gori (Il Postino), Irwin Winkler (Creed). Producer Gaston Pavlovich’s company Fabrica de Cine also provided the lead financing for Silence, alongside Executive Producer Dale A. Brown of Sharpsword Films. Silence stars Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Social Network), Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Girls), Liam Neeson (Taken), Tadanobu Asano (Thor), Issey Ogata (The Sun), Ciaran Hinds (Bleed For This), Yosuke Kubozuka (Go), and Yoshi Oida (The Pillow Book). The December 23 release date will see Silence opening opposite another Liam Neeson film. Juan Antonio Bayona’s A Monster Calls is set for a limited release that same day. Also starring Lewis MacDougall, Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell, and Sigourney Weaver, A Monster Calls gets a wide release on January 6, 2017. The December release also has Silence arriving just two days after Sony Pictures‘s sci-fi drama Passengers, 20th Century Fox‘s video game adaptation Assassin’s Creed and Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s animated musical Sing. Opening on a limited release December 12 is Peter Berg’s true Boston Marathon bombing tale Patriot’s Day and Pedro Almodóvar’s latest, Julieta. Two days later, on December 25, we’re also getting Gold (starring Matthew McConaughey) and the 20th Century Fox comedy Why Him? (starring James Franco and Bryan Cranston).

This is great news to hear. Martin Scorsese is one of my filmmaking idols and I can honestly say that there is not a single bad film in is repertoire of films. I honestly think that this is going to be one of best films and even an instant masterpiece. It's got an absolutely talented cast that might be one of the best assembled with the likes of Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson and Adam Driver. This film is going to be a massive Oscar contender and it helps that it coming out around Christmas time to stay fresh in the mind of Oscar voters.

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia (via Suicide Squadcast/Comic Book), Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes let slip a timetable for the highly-anticipated solo Batman film starring Ben Affleck, saying: “Ben announced a Batman movie [that] he’s going to direct, star, write for – I think it’s a year and a half out.” What remains unclear about this is if Bewkes is referring to a production start date for the film as being “a year and a half out” or the film’s release date. Eighteen months from now is close to March 16, 2018, which was the release date believed to be set for The Flash, to be followed by Aquaman on July 27, 2018. Warner Bros. does have two release dates set for Untitled DC movies on both October 5, 2018 and November 1, 2019, either of which could belong to solo Batman movie, though in order to hit either release date production would need to begin at least a year prior to its debut. However, Affleck has previously stated he doesn’t want to begin production on the film until the script, which he co-wrote alongside DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns, was in proper shape. It stands to reason that production isn’t that far out as casting has already begun with the recent confirmation that Joe Manganiello would play the assassin Deathstroke in the film. For the time being though, and like The Batman himself, it remains a mystery.

I honestly don't believe this news. I think 2 years is more realistic idea than a year and a half simply because it is going to give both Affleck and Johns more time to perfect the script and at this point if you are Warner Bros., then this would be another change to the schedule after you've already made two or three. You just can't keep shuffling around project just becasue you feel like it, you have to make a plan and stick with it in order to get fans excited for a certain film at a certain time rather than them waiting six months later than expected. I have some really high hopes for this film and with Affleck behind the camera, I have no doubt this will be DC's best film.

Filming for Michael Bay’s new Transformers movie continues in London, England, and now star Mark Wahlberg has spoken about it to his fans in a new Facebook video where he confirms that Transformers: The Last Knight will feature not just the return of the Dinobots but also Mini-Dinobots! “It’s a cool new story,” Wahlberg said. “It’s kind of like a man on the run. Sir Anthony Hopkins is also in the film, got a cool new cast and cool new robots, some cool new villains and some cool new Dinobots. I think you guys are gonna really go crazy for the mini Dinobots.” A Paramount Pictures film, Transformers: The Last Knight is confirmed to also include the return of Transformers: Age of Extinction star Mark Wahlberg as Cade Yeager, Josh Duhamel as Lieutenant Colonel Lennox, Tyrese Gibson as Robert Epps, Stanley Tucci as Joshua Joyce, as well as a new role for Isabela Moner (100 Things to Do Before High School, Growing Up Fisher) as the film’s female lead, Izabella. Jerrod Carmichael, Laura Haddock and Santiago Cabrera also have roles, as Liam Carrigan (Once Upon a Time), who plays King Arthur. A few of the titular robots in disguise have also been confirmed to return, including Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Drift, Hound, Crosshairs, Hot Rod, and Sqweeks for the Autobots, with Megatron, Barricade, and Onslaught for the Decepticons. Michael Bay returns to the director’s chair for the film, which is written by Iron Man scribes Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down). Ian Bryce, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto will produce the sequel. Transformers: The Last Knight will open in theaters on June 23, 2017. Plans for the franchise already include a Bumblebee spin-off film to be released June 8, 2018 and the sixth Transformers movie set to debut June 28, 2019.

This might be the stupidest idea I've ever heard. Look I was really excited to see the Dinobots in the last Transformers film and they were used a lot in the marketing campaign and then they only get 10 minutes of screen time. Now not only are they trying to mislead me again, they are trying to win me over with mini versions of the Dinobots. They just need to stop before the just completely ruin one of the greatest things Hasbro has ever created and I can honestly say I'm excited for this to be the last Michael Bay Transformers film.

While the upcoming Jurassic World 2 is set to begin production in Hawaii and London in February 2017, it looks as if one legacy cast member will not be returning: Sam Neill. The Hunt for the Wilderpeople actor -who recently revealed a role in Thor: Ragnarok– told Shortlist (vis Screen Rant) not to expect his Dr. Alan Grant to make any new trips into dino country. “I think the problem is that no one knows where Alan Grant is anymore,” Neill said, filling in his own backstory. “He’s retired from paleontology. He’s sick to death of dinosaurs and running. He’s not quite as fleet of foot as he was, and he’s now retired to Dayton, Ohio, and has a very successful accountancy business. I think that’s what’s happened to Alan. Either that or he’s dead. How do you recover from all of that stuff? I don’t think therapists are trained to deal with post-dino stuff. No. I don’t think you get over it. Accountancy would be one way.” Wether Neill, who reprised the role for 2001’s coldly-recieved Jurassic Park III, doesn’t want to return to the role or is playing coy is up to debate (his tone is pretty playful), but according to him he has not been approached by Universal. “The call hasn’t come,” Neill stated. “And no one can find Grant. He’s disappeared. Someone found his hat. His hat was floating on the Hudson river, but that was the last ever heard of him.” Neill’s original co-star Jeff Goldblum has said he’d be open to reprising his Ian Malcolm character from Jurassic Park and The Lost World, and fans would love to see Grant and Malcolm together onscreen again for the first time since 1993. Whether the filmmakers will give in to nostalgia or keep the series moving forward with the new characters they’ve established has yet to be seen. The Impossible and A Monster Calls director J.A. Bayona will direct the Jurassic World 2 from a script by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. Trevorrow decided to hand over the director’s chair for the sequel, opting to journey to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: Episode IX. He previously revealed the quote from the original Jurassic Park that inspired their idea for the sequel, which comes from Sam Neil’s Alan Grant: “Dinosaurs and man, two species separated by 65 million years of evolution have just been suddenly thrown back into the mix together. How can we possibly have the slightest idea what to expect?” Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will both reprise their roles for the film. Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg will produce the film, which is set for release on June 22, 2018.

I'm not surprised by this news at all. I mean with the idea of Jurassic World, you are wanting a  fresh and new start that distances itself from the original while also using callbacks just for nostalgic purposes. While I would be excited to see both Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum or just one of them return, I think it's beneficial to the story that they don't unless they are small cameos. I like the direction the franchise is going and I think leaving out the old characters is a smart idea.

After years of teasing that they wanted to make a sequel to MacGruber, star Will Forte and director Jorma Taccone have taken to Twitter to reveal that they have, in fact, just started writing MacGruber 2! The “MacGyver” parody was originally created by Taccone and Forte as interstitial segments for “Saturday Night Live,” until Taccone directed and Forte starred in the film version in 2010. Although the clueless soldier of fortune failed to make a mark at the box office, bombing out with a paltry $8.5 million, it has since become a cult favorite on DVD and cable. Although a screenplay is a good sign that things are finally moving forward, its no guarantee that MacGruber 2 will actually see the light of day. Perhaps the success or failure of CBS’s new “MacGyver” reboot series (which did well in its debut slot last Friday) could play a part in getting a new MacGruber adventure greenlit. Produced by Universal Pictures and Relativity Media, the original MacGruber co-starred Ryan Phillippe, Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer, Powers Boothe and Maya Rudolph. Forte currently stars in the hit FOX series “The Last Man on Earth,” and will play the central figure of comedy writer Doug Kenney in David Wain’s National Lampoon biopic A Futile and Stupid Gesture. Taccone’s last comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping came out in June and grossed $9.4 million.

I'm really happy to hear this news. While MacGruber may not have been the best film in the world, it was still just absolutely funny in a stupid and fun way. It's one of the more succesful films to be based on an SNL skit and I like that the filmmakers were able to make fun of MacGyver and other spy films and I'm really looking forward to seeing where the second film will go with the character.

Weekend Movie News 9-23-16 to 9-25-16

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Lionsgate has just revealed, via the film’s official twitter feed, a late addition to the Power Rangers cast. Bill Hader is set to voice the team’s robot, Alpha 5! Hader has some experience bringing life to big-screen robots: his voice was used in part to create Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ roly poly rebel, BB-8. Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late. Hader’s Alpha 5 joins a Power Rangers cast that also includes Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger, and Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect, The Hunger Games franchise) as Rita Repulsa. Directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac), Power Rangers is written by John Gatins (Kong: Skull Island, Real Steel), Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (Dracula Untold), Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor), and Max Landis (Chronicle). Producers are Power Rangers creator Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Wyck Godfrey, and Marty Bowen (The Twilight Saga, The Fault in Our Stars, The Maze Runner franchise). The new Power Rangers hits the big screen March 24, 2017.

This is absolutely terrific casting. Bill Hader is a phenomenal actor and his comedic talents are above and beyond everyone else's. With his ability to do some great voice impersonations, I think he his the perfect fit for Alpha 5. I think this just just adds more to the legitimacy of this film now that you have a cast that includes Elisabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston and now Bill Hader. Everything that can be released has been released so far such as cast reveals, suit reveals, zord reveals and even a teaser poster, now it's time for a trailer because as of this current moment, you are 6 months out from the release so I think the trailer will be released very soon.

The upcoming Thor: Ragnarok has added another fan-favorite actor to its cast, as Sam Neill reveals that he filmed a small role for the film. “I’m not really allowed to say this and I can’t tell you what it is… I did a couple of days on Thor just before I came over here,” Neill tells Shortlist (via EW). “If I say anything else, Marvel’s secret agents — and they are lethal — will come and get me and probably my children, as well.” Neill’s casting reunites him with director Taika Waititi, who directed him in his previous film Hunt for the Wilderpeople, but it also reunites him with his Jurassic Park co-star Jeff Goldblum. Thor: Ragnarok will feature the return of Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder himself, with Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Sir Anthony Hopkins again portraying Odin. Cate Blanchett plays the mysterious and powerful new villain Hela, Jeff Goldblum stars as the eccentric Grandmaster, Tessa Thompson will bring the classic hero Valkyrie to life on the big screen, and Karl Urban will add his might to the fray as Skurge. Kevin Feige will produce the film, joined by executive producers Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Victoria Alonso, Thomas M. Hammel and Stan Lee. The screenplay hails from Stephany Folsom, Craig Kyle, Eric Pearson and Christopher Yost. Current plans call for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Phase Three” chapter to shoot until October, although production could feasibly continue through the end of the year. Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok will smash its way into theaters on November 3, 2017.

This is also a terrific casting choice. Sam Neill is a terrific actor and while his most recent films haven't been that great, he himself has been pretty good in them. I like that he joins the MCU be because it just shows the type of seasoned actor Marvel looks for. Now as for who he is playing, I think he might be Ragnarok himself, just follow along with me and you'll understand. As we see Hela (played by Cate Blanchett) throughout the film become stronger and stronger, she uses the power of Ragnarok to create the cyborg villain while using help from Bruce Banner's DNA (instead of Tony Stark's DNA used in the comics), to help create a force to challenge Thor. He would only be in the film for the 3rd act as a minion for Hela and the character would be CGI so Sam Neill wouldn't have to do much in the role. I know it's a bit of a stretch, but I'm dying to see either Ragnarok or Beta Ray Bill show up in this film.

Broad Green Pictures and Miramax have released a new Bad Santa 2 green band trailer! Check out the upcoming follow-up to the 2003 hit comedy Bad Santa below. Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade, Simple Plan, Bandits), reprises his Golden Globe-nominated role as Willy Soke alongside the returning Tony Cox as Marcus and Brett Kelly as Thurman Merman. The Bad Santa 2 movie is also set to star Kathy Bates (Misery, Titanic, Dolores Claiborne) as Willy’s tough-as-nails mom Sunny Soke, Ryan Hansen (Veronica Mars, 2 Broke Girls) and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men, The Neon Demon) as Regent and Diane Hastings, a married couple who run a charitable organization and Jenny Zigrino (50 Shades of Black) and Jeff Skowron (The Good Shepherd) as security guards Gina and Dorfman, respectively. Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus, to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve. Along for the ride is ‘the kid’ – chubby and cheery Thurman Merman, a 250-pound ray of sunshine who brings out Willie’s sliver of humanity. Mommy issues arise when the pair are joined by Willie’s horror story of a mother, Sunny Soke. A super butch super bitch, Sunny raises the bar for the gang’s ambitions, while somehow lowering the standards of criminal behavior. Willie is further burdened by lusting after the curvaceous and prim Diane, the charity director with a heart of gold and libido of steel. Directed by Mark Waters (Freaky Friday, Mean Girls), the Bad Santa 2 movie will hit the big screen November 23, 2016.

This was a really funny trailer. Eventhough it was the green band trailer, it still brought a lot of laughs and it shows that this film has a lot of jokes in its arsenal which is both a good and bad thing. It's good because there is a variety out there that way they are showing the same jokes over and over again. It's bad in the sense that with the red band trailer showing a whole different set of jokes, they may have shown all of the jokes in the trailer which doesn't bode well at all. I really loved the first film and I'm looking forward to this film, but I just don't know how it is going to do with showing all of these jokes unless the filmmakers have got something else up their sleeve.

Normally, you watch The Ring tape and then have to die seven days later. This year, however, Samara seems to be granting a bit of an extension as Paramount Pictures‘ new release schedule sees Rings delayed four months. Originally set to open in theaters just before Halloween, the continuation of the horror franchise will now debut in theaters February 3, 2017. This marks the third time that updated calendars have seen Rings delayed. In Rings, a young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before… Rings is directed by F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall) from a script by David Loucka, Jacob Estes and Akiva Goldsman. Rings stars Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, Johnny Galecki, Aimee Teegarden, Bonnie Morgan and Vincent D’Onofrio. The film is produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald. The new release date will see Rings opening opposite Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting sequel. The date was also planned to see the release of Paramount’s Same Kind of Different as Me, although that film is now likely to shift release dates as well. October 28, meanwhile, will now see the arrival of Ron Howard’s third chapter in his series of Tom Hanks led Dan Brown adaptations, Inferno. Meanwhile, there’s The Eagle Huntress, a Sony Pictures Classics documentary narrated by Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ Daisy Ridley.

This is really disappointing news to hear. If you all know me, then you'll know that I hate it when horror films that don't come out around Halloween because that it is considered the scariest time of year. Now if it were a horror film specifically made for a holiday like My Bloody Valentine, then that's the only exception. The first Ring film was an instant hit and it changed horror films for the foreseeable future. The fact that the film is getting delayed really doesn't help anything especially when your a sequel and you're coming out further and further away from the original film. Hopefully this pays off, but I honestly don't think it will.

In addition to delaying the upcoming Rings from an October release date to February 2017, Paramount has also delayed their upcoming Friday the 13th movie from January 13, 2017 to October 13, 2017. Director Breck Eisner (The Crazies, Sahara, The Last Witch Hunter) was hired to direct the film in August. The film features a script by Prisoners and Contraband writer Aaron Guzikowski. Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller spoke earlier this summer about where the script might take the beloved Jason Voorhees, saying: ““Aaron’’s story has great characters. …You kind of have to understand Jason Voorhees, so we go back and we kind of started over and work our way forward. Origin-ish, but it’s an origin that no one has seen before. Obviously Pamela’’s there, but it’’s a little bit different from what you’’ve seen before.”” The Friday the 13th franchise currently consists of the ten original films, the 2003 crossover Freddy vs. Jason, and, most recently, the 2009 reboot. There was also a short-lived television series that, despite its title, was unconnected to the plot of the film franchise. A new Friday the 13th television series was previously in development for The CW but has since been canceled.

While I honestly don't care about the news, there is a silver lining to it. Look the Friday the 13th franchise is a special franchise that has a huge following and since probably the 3rd film the franchise has really gone down hill and I don't know what to think about a new film. I for one hate the idea of it coming out on Friday the 13th because that is the most cliched idea ever. But going back to the last bit of news, this film is coming out in October which is around the time of Halloween. I'm curious to see which direction the film is going to go, but I'm not to excited for the film itself.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, which of these stories peaked your interest or was there another story that interested you? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

My Review of The Magnificent Seven (1960)

With the new Magnificent Seven remake being released this weekend, I thought it would be fitting to review The Magnificent Seven (1960), the film that that this new film is being remade from. So without further ado...

The Magnificent Seven (1960) theatrical poster.jpg

A Mexican village is at the mercy of Calvera (played by Eli Wallach), the leader of a band of outlaws. The townspeople, too afraid to fight for themselves, hire seven American gunslingers to free them from the bandits' raids. The professional gunmen train the villagers to defend themselves, then plan a trap for the evil Calvera.

This film is absolutely brilliant. If any film had a harder time living up to the original film, it was this film. Having been a remake of Seven Samurai, this film had a lot of pressure and with the help of director John Sturges and several talented actors, they were able to pull it off. It's a nice new setting changing it from a Japanese village to a small Mexican village. It has every element you want in a Western film such as wide shots and just gorgeous moving scenery that let you take in the landscape  and make you feel like you are in the film. The performances are are fantastic and when you have a combination like James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson on screen together, you know you are going to get a great film. Everything just works so well, even the very subtle comedy relieves a lot of built up tension within the film and it makes it flow so much smoother. When comparing this film to Seven Samurai, the one place in which this film fails is the action scenes and even the last 30 minutes. In this film they all feel so cliched and just don't hit home like they should and it makes for a pretty boring film at times. Overall this film did an outstanding job of making a great film based off one of the greatest films ever, but it doesn't hit all of the points that it could've to make for a better film. I give The Magnificent Seven (1960) an 8.5 out of 10.
