So I recently watched All Eyez on Me and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...
The true and untold story of prolific rapper, actor, poet and activist Tupac Shakur (played by Demetrius Shipp Jr.), from his early days in New York to his status as one of the world's most recognized and influential voices. Against all odds, Shakur's raw talent, powerful lyrics and revolutionary mindset establish him as a cultural icon whose legacy continues to grow long after his death.
Out of all the bio-pics people have been clamoring for this is on top of the list and it ends up being absolutely terrible. In a bio-pic you explore back story of the main person while using key important moments as filler material showing how each effects the person while exploring backstory. In this film however, if you don't know who Tupac really is and why he did certain things then you find out in this film because there is absolutely no backstory and it just takes the key essential moments of his career and makes a film out of that. It literally just takes certain things such as his first album then to his prison sentence, then to Death Row then to his death and it literally gives no context to any situation other than showing here this is one thing that went on, we'll spend 10 minutes or less on it then move on to the next moment in his life and it continues like that nonstop. Somehow they were able to make this film 2 hours and 20 minutes long when it shouldn't have been no more than 1 hour and 45 to 2 hours and it's because they put in so many different and unnecessary things that so many people already knew. The biggest complaint is that the last 20 minutes of the film completely changes the tone of the film from a bio-pic to a drama and really puts the emphasis on his death an d the moments leading up it and actually showing his death and yes it was a tragic event, but don't treat it like it was the end of the world and make things so depressing. The performances are the only thing that is really great about the film and Demetrius Shipp Jr. did a great job of portraying Tupac although ti would've been cool to have seen Anthony Mackie reprise his role from Notorious and sort of make it a sequel and it would've worked since they brought back Jamal Woolard who portrayed Biggie Smalls in Notorious. Overall this might be one of the worst bio-pics ever made and it's a real shame considering the source material and a little more focus on putting context into scenes would've gone a long way. I give All Eyez on Me a 1 out of 10.
