My Review of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie

With Power Rangers (2017) being released this weekend, I thought it would be fitting to review the first ever Power Rangers film, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. So without further ado...

After a construction crew accidentally cracks open a gigantic egg that has imprisoned evil maniac Ivan Ooze (played by Paul Freeman) for centuries, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers prepare to face their most formidable foe yet. The vengeful Ooze kills their elderly mentor, Zordon (voiced by Nicholas Bell), and with him the source of the Rangers' power. Stunned by Zordon's death, the Rangers struggle to contain Ooze without the help of the Zords, the giant mechanical robots they have grown to depend upon in battle.

This is one of the cheesiest films ever and it speaks to a generation. Power Rangers was a cultural phenomenal and at the time of this films release it was running full steam. The show itself borrowed it's action footage from a Japanese show called Super Sentai and when it was brought to America it was done really well to help mix together the American produced portion and the Japanese portion into one big epic 30 minute episode. Making a feature film on the material is a great idea especially at the peak of its reign and it couldn't have been a better film. Yes, in this film there is not stock footage and the action scenes look to be subpar compared to the show which ran with a much smaller budget. As a film that came out in 1995, the visual effects look awful compared to what we see in 2017 and even back in 1995, they weren't all that great when you consider other great visual masterpieces we'd seen beforehand. performance wise we get the actors that were on the show at the time and to be honest they are actually quite decent compared to the show, but that's not saying that much especially if you've seen the show. The best part of the film is Paul Freeman as Ivan Ooze and while some moments are a tad over the top, he delivers some of the best comedy of the film and he does play a pretty menacing villain. Story-wise, the film felt like a 3 part episode of the show and maybe it would've worked better had it been that way instead of the show basically ignoring in and doing their own version of how they get the new powers. Overall the film is basically a big budgeted episode of the show itself and while it does have all of the elements you expect, it would've been nice to see the film go in a little different direction. I give Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie a 5 out of 10.
