8-20-14/8-21-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Since I didn't get to bring you news from yesterday I figured that I would combine today's and yesterday's news (3 stories from each day). So here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

Following the announcement yesterday that Warner Bros. had cast Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of Shere Khan in the Andy Serkis-directed The Jungle Book: Origins, we've now got word on who will be joining him for the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Naomie Harris, Tom Hollander, Eddie Marsan and Peter Mullan will voice characters in the October 21, 2016 release based on Rudyard Kipling's novel, while Rohan Chand (Bad Words) will star as the human boy Mowgli. Serkis will also take a role in the film. Serkis will play Baloo the bear, Bale is the panther Bagheera, Blanchett will voice Kaa, Hollander is the jackal Tabaqui, Mullan will be leader of the wolf pack Akela, Harris is the female wolf Nisha, and Marsan is her mate Vihaan.

This is excellent casting. First it's never wrong to get talent and getting two Academy Award winning actors in Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett is just awesome. Also director Andy Serkis adding himself to cast is amazing and I can't wait to see him do another character in mo-cap. Now there are two films based on The Jungle Book coming out, but this one looks to be the better sounding and looking film.

Despite an HD image of Henry Cavill's new Superman suit already being online, a new photo (via MTV) from the set of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has started to make the rounds showing Cavill in costume on the set, and we've got to admit it's a little exciting. You can check it out below! Also starring Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Tao Okamoto, Holly Hunter, and Scoot McNairy, the Zack Snyder-directed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.

This suit looks pretty dang cool. The suit has a mixed feel of the Christopher Reeves Superman suit and the suit that was to be worn by Nicholas Cage in the shelved Superman Lives!. Eventhough I hate Superman, this costume does pay a little omage to the comics and I can't wait to see it on the big screen.

Relativity Studios will soon be entering pre-production on a sequel to The November Man in advance of its nationwide debut on August 27, it was announced today. Brosnan will reprise his role as the lead character in the films based on Bill Granger's bestselling "November Man" book series. Beau St. Clair and Brosnan will produce through their Irish Dreamtime banner with Sriram Das of Das Films.

Code named 'The November Man'; Peter Devereaux (Pierce Brosnan) is an extremely dangerous and highly trained ex-CIA agent. "The November Man" series is the ultimate cat and mouse game set in the world of international espionage. Robbie Brenner, President of Production at Relativity said: "'The November Man' is a gritty series that re-invents the spy genre with its master Pierce Brosnan by combining the best elements of James Bond and Jason Bourne while echoing the cool, sleek action movies of the 70s. We are excited to launch 'The November Man' later this month and to continue to explore Peter Devereaux's dangerous world with Pierce over the years to come." Brosnan said: "'The November Man' is an iconic, tough character and I am excited to partner with Relativity to continue to bring him to life."

This is pretty exciting news. For a studio to already greenlight a sequel to film that hasn't come out yet is pretty bold and it shows that the studio has confidence in this film. Now so far early reviews for the film have been mostly negative so we'll have to see how it all pans out next week when the film is released.

New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures have revealed the new trailer for Annabelle, the horror thriller opening in theaters on October 3. You can check the video out below.

She terrified you in The Conjuring, but this is where it all began for Annabelle. Capable of unspeakable evil, the actual doll exists locked up in an occult museum in Connecticut - visited only by a priest who blesses her twice a month. The supernatural thriller Annabelle begins before the evil was unleashed. John Form has found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia - a beautiful, rare vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress. But Mia’s delight with Annabelle doesn't last long.  On one horrific night, their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult, who violently attack the couple. Spilled blood and terror are not all they leave behind. The cultists have conjured an entity so malevolent that nothing they did will compare to the sinister conduit to the damned that is now... Annabelle.

Holy crap this trailer is pretty creepy. I really enjoyed The Conjuring and this film looks to be better than that. I will say that creepy dolls do freak me out and I don't know if I want to see it for that reason (but I will anyway). Folks this film has the potential to be the best horror film of the new millennium and I hope it lives up to my hype.

A familiar face is about to return to the Wizarding World. Variety reports that four-time Harry Potter director David Yates has signed on to direct Warner Bros. Pictures' Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them! The big screen return to J.K. Rowling's world hits theaters November 18, 2016.

The film, based on Rowling's world of witches and wizards and inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook of the same name, will follow the adventures of the book's fictitious author, Newt Scamander.

The first in a planned trilogy set in the wizarding world, the story will feature magical creatures and characters, some of which will be familiar to devoted "Harry Potter" fans. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the "Harry Potter" books or seen the films, but Newt's story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry's gets underway.

This is a great idea. Like the article stated David Yates has directed Harry Potter before (he directed the last 4 films) and I think he'll fit in well with this new story. It seems like from the beginning that Warner Bros. was wanting to get someone who had directed a film in the Harry Potter franchise before (They tired to get Alfonso Cuaron to direct the film) and I personally think that Yates will do great with the film and hopefully the rest of the trilogy.

The shifting of release dates is nothing new and with studios grabbing dates for movies two, three and even four months out (and more), it's not too surprising when a company like DreamWorks Animation changes its mind on a couple of their releases. Today, they announced that their sequels The Croods 2 and Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves, which were scheduled for early November in 2017 and 2018 respectively will now be released the weekend before Christmas. The Croods 2 will now arrive December 22, 2017 while Puss in Boots 2 will come out a year later on December 21, 2018.

The Croods 2 would originally have come out directly between an untitled Marvel film and an untitled Warner Bros/DC film and Universal's new animated Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Puss in Boots 2 would have suffered a similar fate between another untitled Marvel film and an untitled DC "event film."  As of now, neither has any competition for those December release dates although James Cameron's Avatar 3 (also to be distributed by 20th Century Fox) is also scheduled for an unknown date in December 2017.

I think this is a pretty smart idea. Now granted when we hear films are getting pushed back it's because the film is behind in production and it needs a little more time, but that's not the case with these films. It's simply business and they are trying to make the best profit possible by being on a date where there is no competition or to offer counter-programming to the other films on that same date.
