My Top 10 Disaster Films of All-Time

A disaster film is a film genre that has an impending or ongoing disaster as its subject and primary plot device. Such disasters include natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes or asteroid collisions, accidents such as shipwrecks or airplane crashes, or calamities like worldwide disease pandemics. The films usually feature some degree of build-up, the disaster itself and sometimes the aftermath, usually from the point of view of specific individual characters or their families. With that being said I'm going to bring you my top 10 disaster films of all-time. So without further ado...

10. Titanic
The film poster shows a man and a woman hugging over a picture of the Titanic's bow. In the background is a partly cloudy sky and at the top are the names of the two lead actors. The middle has the film's name and tagline, and the bottom contains a list of the director's previous works, as well as the film's credits, rating, and release date.

I know this film is real girly, but I honestly don't care what people think because it is simply one of the most beautifully shot films in film history one of the greatest films of all-time. American treasure-seeker Brock Lovett (played by Bill Paxton) is retrieving artifacts from the submerged ship. Lovett looks for diamonds but finds a drawing of a young woman, nude except for a necklace. When 102-year-old Rose (played by Gloria Stuart) reveals she's the person in the portrait, she is summoned to the wreckage site to tell her story of the 56-carat diamond necklace and her experiences of 84 years earlier. The scene then shifts to 1912 Southampton where passengers boarding the Titanic include penniless Jack Dawson (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and society girl Rose DeWitt Bukater (played by Kate Winslet), returning to Philadelphia with her wealthy fiance Cal Hockley (played by Billy Zane). After the April 10th launch, Rose develops a passionate interest in Jack, and Cal's reaction is vengeful. At midpoint in the film, the Titanic slides against the iceberg and water rushes into the front compartments. Even engulfed, Cal continues to pursue Jack and Rose as the massive liner begins its descent. Titanic was nominated for 14 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Song, Best Original Score,  Best Sound Editing, Best Sound, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing and Best Visual Effects while winning 11 (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Song, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing and Best Visual Effects) and it has a rating of 88% on rottentomatoes.com.

9. The Perfect Storm
Perfect storm poster.jpg

This film is just spectacular and has a really talented cast. Billy Tyne (played by George Clooney), captain of the Andrea Gail, hasn't had much luck finding catch on his most recent trips to sea, and with money short, he and his crew -- Bob Shatford (played by Mark Wahlberg), Dale Murphy (played by John C. Reilly), and David Sullivan (played by William Fichtner) set out again when they hear that the fish are running. Billy's hunch proves correct, but when the ship's refrigeration system goes haywire, they have to return to shore as quickly as possible before the fish spoil, sending them into the middle of the worst storm in history. The Perfect Storm has a rating of 47% on rottentomatoes.com.

8. United 93
United93.jpg

This film is emotionally powerful and it gives us an insight to some of the bravest people in American history. The film tells the story of the takeoff and hijacking of United Airlines Flight 93 by terrorists, the discovery by passengers with cell phones that other hijacked planes had been steered into the World Trade Center towers, and the realization that their plane was being steered toward Washington D.C. United 93 was nominated for 2 Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Film Editing and it has a rating of 91% on rottentomatoes.com.

7. Godzilla (2014)
A giant god-like lizard towering over a blazing cityscape engulfed in an inferno of death and doom.

This film was just awesome and it was a great reboot to bring the most iconic movie monster back to the big screen. Fifteen years after the unearthing of two chrysalises in a mine in the Philippines come two pods which hold giant radiation-eating creatures, known as "MUTOs", which cause great damage in Japan, Hawaii and the western United States. Their awakening also stirs a much larger, destructive, ancient alpha predator known as "Godzilla", whose existence has been kept secret by the U.S. government since 1954. Godzilla (2014) has a rating of 73% on rottentomatoes.com.

6. Apollo 13
A thin light-gray crescent Moon stretches diagonally from lower left to upper right against a black background, with a blue and white crescent Earth in the far distance. In front of the portion of the moon that is in shadow on the left appears a small image of the Apollo 13 Command/Service module joined to the Lunar Module, with vapor streaming from a hole in the side of the Service Module — the words "Houston, we have a problem" appear directly above the craft in white lower case lettering. The names of the principal actors appear in white lettering at the top of the image, and the title APOLLO 13 in block white upper-case letters appears at the lower right.

I really like films that are based on true events and this film is one of the best based on true events and it has a great ensemble cast as well. Astronaut Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks) leads command module pilot Jack Swigert (played by Kevin Bacon) and lunar module driver Fred Haise (played by Bill Paxton) on what is slated as NASA's third lunar landing mission. All goes smoothly until the craft is halfway through its mission, when an exploding oxygen tank threatens the crew's oxygen and power supplies. As the courageous astronauts face the dilemma of either suffocating or freezing to death, Mattingly and Mission Control leader Gene Kranz (played by Ed Harris) struggle to find a way to bring the crew back home, all the while knowing that the spacemen face probable death once the battered ship reenters the Earth's atmosphere. Apollo 13 was nominated for 9 Academy Awards including Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score, Best Picture, Best Visual Effects and Best adapted Screenplay while winning 2 (Best Film Editing and Best Sound) and it has a rating of 95% on rottentomatoes.com.

5. Airport (1970)
Airport film.jpg

This film is just awesome and like most disaster films it has a great ensemble cast. Mel Bakersfeld (played by Burt Lancaster) is the manager of Lincoln Airport, facing a night beset by the worst blizzard in a decade, a wife (played by Dana Wynter) who announces she wants a divorce, a primary runway blocked by an airliner stuck in a snowdrift, and a governing board ready to fire him. Bakersfeld's cynical, smooth-talking brother-in-law, Vernon Demerest (played by Dean Martin), won't let up on his criticism of the management at Lincoln, but he has his own problems as well, mostly in the form of a young stewardess, Gwen Meighen (played by Jacqueline Bisset), who is pregnant by him and whom he finds he genuinely loves. Add to that the presence of an old lady stowaway (played by Helen Hayes) and a mentally disturbed passenger (played by Van Heflin) carrying a bomb. Airport (1970) was nominated for 9 Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actress, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Picture, Best Sound Mixing and Best adapted Screenplay while winning the award for for Best Supporting Actress and it has a rating of 80% on rottentomatoes.com.

4. The Towering Inferno
Towering inferno movie poster.jpg

This film has a great ensemble cast of a-listers form the 1970's and it's just absolutely thrilling. On the day of its grand opening, the world's tallest building becomes victim to an electrical mishap and a subsequent huge fire on its upper floors, causing all of the city's rescue teams to converge upon the scene and attempt to fight against what is a raging monster. The Towering Inferno was nominated for 8 Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actor, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing and Best Picture while winning 3 (Best Original Song, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing) and it has a rating of 74% on rottentomatoes.com.

3. Independence Day
Independence day movieposter.jpg

I absolutely love this film and really just brings out the American in me. The story begins with the approach of a series of massive spaceships, which many on Earth greet with open arms, looking forward to the first contact with alien life. Unfortunately, these extraterrestrials have not come in peace, and they unleash powerful weapons that destroy most of the world's major cities. Thrown into chaos, the survivors struggle to band together and put up a last-ditch resistance in order to save the human race. As this is a Hollywood film, this effort is led by a group of scrappy Americans, including a computer genius who had foreseen the alien's evil intent (played by Jeff Goldblum), a hot-shot jet pilot (played by Will Smith), and the President of the United States (played by Bill Pullman). Independence Day was nominated for 2 Academy Awards includign Best Sound Mixing and Best Visual Effects while winning the award for Best Sound Mixing and it has a rating of 60% on rottentomatoes.com.

2. Armageddon
Armageddon-poster06.jpg

This film is my ultimate guilty pleasure film and I just absolutely love it. After a routine  space shuttle mission goes disastrously wrong, it's discovered that an asteroid "the size of Texas" en route. A plan is devised by NASA to send oil drillers to land on the asteroid and drop a nuclear device down a 1000-foot shaft, a scheme calculated to crack the asteroid into two halves, saving Earth. NASA begins a crash program to train beer-besotted oil roughnecks for the mission. Armageddon was nominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Song and Best Sound Mixing and it has a rating of 39% on rottentomatoes.com.

1. Twister
Twistermovieposter.jpg

I honestly think that I've never had more fun during a disaster film than I had with this film. Jo Harding (played by Helen Hunt) became a storm chaser (a meteorologist who photographs and scientifically studies tornadoes in the field) after a large twister sucked her hapless daddy into oblivion when she was a girl. Bill (played by Bill Paxton) was a storm chaser too, but left to become a successful weatherman. His change of profession ruined his marriage to Jo. Before separating, the Hardings invented DOROTHY, a gizmo designed to release thousands of tiny sensors when a tornado passes over it. The Hardings hope the information transmitted by the sensors will provide insight into the nature of the whirling windstorms. Backed by a large corporation, the villainous Dr. Jonas Miller (played by Carey Elwes) has created a similar machine. Neither gadget has been field tested and both groups of storm chasers are anxious to find tornadoes. At the peak of the worst twister season in decades, Bill shows up at Jo's truck with his prissy fiancee Melissa (played by Jami Gertz) so Jo can sign divorce papers. Suddenly a twister is spotted. With little hesitation, Bill rejoins the mad rush to reach it in time to activate DOROTHY. Jonas and his team are right behind them. Throughout the day the storms become worse and the rivalrous race becomes more intense. As they continue facing incredible dangers together Jo and Bill find renewed love while poor Melissa finds only an intense desire to get away from these storm-obsessed lunatics. Twister was nominated for 2 Academy Awards including Best Visual Effects and Best Sound and it has a rating of 58% on rottentomatoes.com.

8-28-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Warning: Potential spoilers for Avengers: Age of Ultron below.

Despite the fact that just this week, Jeremy Renner mentioned there were "rumblings" he could appear in the upcoming Captain America 3, it has long been a fan theory that his character might kick the bucket in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now, in an interview with Larry King, Renner says that's not the case.

"No, no," Renner said when asked outright if he dies in the sequel. "No, I don't die. I think they want to keep me around for a while."

Opening in theaters on May 1, 2015, the highly-anticipated sequel also stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, James Spader, Cobie Smulders, Thomas Kretschmann and Paul Bettany.

This is interesting to hear. Usually big films like The Avengers: Age of Ultron tell their actors to keep quiet and not reveal anything big. Now granted Marvel could have told Renner that he could say something like this. But it's cool to hear from Renner that Hawkeye won't die in the next film and I really hope that he has a bigger role in the upcoming films.

Sony Pictures Classics has released today, via IMBb, a new trailer for director Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher, starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave, Sienna Miller and Anthony Michael Hall. Check it out in the video below and take a look at the recently-released Steve Carell poster in the gallery viewer at the bottom of this page.

Opening in limited theaters on November 14, Foxcatcher tells the gripping, true story of Olympic Wrestling Champion brothers Mark Schultz (Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Ruffalo) and their relationship with the eccentric John du Pont (Carell), heir to the du Pont Chemical fortune that led to murder.

This trailer was really good. It wasn't as creepy as the previous trailers but it was still very dark. Look as I've I said before with this film it is an Oscar bait film and it will get a lot of attention come awards season. I'm gonna go ahead and guarantee that it gets at least 6 nominations for the Oscars and that's without even watching the film. I'm honestly really excited to see this film and see actors such as Channing Tatum and Steve Carell in this type of film.

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday night (August 26) to present Honorary Awards to Jean-Claude Carriere, Hayao Miyazaki and Maureen O'Hara, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Harry Belafonte. All four awards will be presented at the Academy's 6th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, November 8, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center. "The Governors Awards allow us to reflect upon not the year in film, but the achievements of a lifetime," said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. "We're absolutely thrilled to honor these outstanding members of our global filmmaking community and look forward to celebrating with them in November."

Carriere, who began his career as a novelist, was introduced to screenwriting by French comedian and filmmaker Pierre Étaix, with whom he shared an Oscar® for the live action short subject "Heureux Anniversaire (Happy Anniversary)" in 1962. He received two more nominations during his nearly two-decade collaboration with director Luis Bunuel, for the screenplays for The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and That Obscure Object of Desire. Carriere also has collaborated notably with such directors as Volker Schlondorff (The Tin Drum), Jean-Luc Godard (Every Man for Himself) and Andrzej Wajda (Danton). He earned a fourth Oscar nomination for The Unbearable Lightness of Being with director Philip Kaufman.

Miyazaki is an artist, writer, director, producer and three-time Oscar nominee in the Animated Feature Film category, winning in 2002 for Spirited Away. His other nominations were for Howl's Moving Castle in 2005 and The Wind Rises last year. Miyazaki gained an enormous following in his native Japan for such features as Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service before breaking out internationally in the late 1990s with Princess Mononoke. He is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, a renowned animation studio based in Tokyo.

O'Hara, a native of Dublin, Ireland, came to Hollywood in 1939 to star opposite Charles Laughton in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. She went on to appear in a wide range of feature films, including the swashbucklers The Black Swan and Sinbad the Sailor, the dramas This Land Is Mine and A Woman's Secret, the family classics Miracle on 34th Street and The Parent Trap, the spy comedy Our Man in Havana and numerous Westerns. She was a favorite of director John Ford, who cast her in five of his films, including How Green Was My Valley, Rio Grande and The Quiet Man.

An actor, producer, singer and lifelong activist, Belafonte began performing in theaters and nightclubs in and around Harlem, where he was born. From the beginning of his film career, he chose projects that shed needed light on racism and inequality, including Carmen Jones, Odds Against Tomorrow and The World, the Flesh and the Devil. He was an early supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, marching and organizing alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. and often funding initiatives with his entertainment income. Belafonte was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1987 and currently serves on the boards of the Advancement Project and the Institute for Policy Studies. His work on behalf of children, education, famine relief, AIDS awareness and civil rights has taken him all over the world.

The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given "to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy."

I'm absolutely thrilled to hear this. I'm a fan of the Academy doing this simply because it gives people who have had illustrious careers but have never received Oscars before. Me and few others in the blogging business think this is a more special than an academy Awards given out for one performance when these are given out for career achievement. I'm really glad to hear that these people are receiving honorary awards.

Open Road Films has debuted, via iTunes Movie Trailers, the trailer for Jon Stewart's directorial debut, Rosewater, which will be released in limited theaters on November 7.

Rosewater is based on The New York Times best-selling memoir "Then They Came for Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival," written by Maziar Bahari. The film marks the directorial debut of "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart, and stars Gael Garcia Bernal.

Rosewater follows the Tehran-born Bahari, a broadcast journalist with Canadian citizenship. In June 2009, Bahari returned to Iran to interview Mir-Hossein Mousavi, who was the prime challenger to president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. As Mousavi's supporters rose up to protest Ahmadinejad's victory declaration hours before the polls closed, Bahari endured personal risk by sending footage of the street riots to the BBC. Bahari was arrested by police, led by a man identifying himself only as "Rosewater," who tortured and interrogated him over the next 118 days. With Bahari's wife leading an international campaign to have her husband freed, and Western media outlets keeping the story alive, Iranian authorities released Bahari on $300,000 bail and the promise he would act as a spy for the government.

This was a really great trailer. It's really surprising to see a comedian like Jon Stewart to write a script for drama and to direct the film as well. But anyway this film looks really interesting and this could get some Oscar attention as well.

The animated poster for Kill Me Three Times has been released ahead of the film's premiere at the Toronto Film Festival next month. Directed by Kriv Stenders, the dark comedic thriller stars Simon Pegg, Sullivan Stapleton, Alice Braga, Teresa Palmer, Bryan Brown, Callan Mulvey and Luke Hemsworth.

Simon Pegg plays the mercurial assassin, Charlie Wofle, who discovers he isn't the only person trying to kill the siren of a sun drenched surfing town (Alice Braga). Charlie quickly finds himself at the center of three tales of murder, mayhem, blackmail and revenge. With an original screenplay by James McFarland, the film also stars Sullivan Stapleton (as a gambling addict that attempts to pay off his debts through a risky life insurance scam), Teresa Palmer (as a small town Lady Macbeth), Callan Mulvey (as a wealthy beach club owner simmering with jealousy), Luke Hemsworth (as a local surfer fighting for the woman he loves) and Bryan Brown (as a corrupt cop who demands the juiciest cut).

This is a really cool poster. It really gives us a feel of what the characters personality as given by the description above. I'm a huge fan of Simon Pegg and he does a great job in comedies and hopefully this one can be one of his better ones.

8-26-14/8-27-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Since I didn't get to bring you news from yesterday I figured that I would combine today's and yesterday's news (3 stories from each day). So here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

(8/26/14)

Production continues on the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and a few more set photos have made their way online (via CBM) and feature an interesting location: The Gotham City Jail! Check them out below. Starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, and Jeremy Irons, the Zack Snyder-directed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.

These are pretty cool photos. I'm a huge Batman fan and to see that the Gotham City Jail will be featured in the film gets me excited. Maybe we'll even see a few of the criminals Batman has out behind bars. I cannot wait to see this film.

Fox Horror has unleashed the trailer for The Pyramid, the suspense thriller opening in theaters on December 5. Directed by Gregory Levasseur and produced by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes), the film stars Ashley Hinshaw, James Buckley, Denis O'Hare, Christa-Marie Nicola and Amir K. In The Pyramid, the ancient wonders of the world have long cursed explorers who've dared to uncover their secrets. But a team of U.S. archaeologists gets more than they bargained for when they discover a lost pyramid unlike any other in the Egyptian desert. As they unlock the horrific secrets buried within, they realize they aren't just trapped, they are being hunted.

This was a really stupid trailer. The film looks really stupid and It's a film I'll see but I'm not really that interested in the film. Plus its a horror film coming out in December which is just the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of.

Cameras are set to roll on Ron Howard's third big screen Dan Brown adaptation in April 2015, Deadline reports. Tom Hanks will reprise his The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons role of Professor Robert Langdon for Inferno, which has been given a tentative release date of December 18, 2015.

The book itself marks the fourth novel to follow Langdon. Published in 2013, Inferno is officially described as follows: In the heart of Italy, Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon is drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history’s most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces... Dante’s Inferno. Against this backdrop, Langdon battles a chilling adversary and grapples with an ingenious riddle that pulls him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science. Drawing from Dante’s dark epic poem, Langdon races to find answers and decide whom to trust... before the world is irrevocably altered.

I'm really surprised by this news. Now don't get me wrong this is the third book in the franchise so I see reason for it happening and plus the past two films have made a lot of money for the studio but the totals have declined each time. the first film grossed over $700 million and the second grossed over $400 million and that's a huge dropoff. Plus it's been almost 6 years between films when this is released. I'm not a fan of the franchise and I'm really skeptical on the film.

(8/27/14)

Marvel Studios (via Empire) has revealed a new photo from the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron and it features director Joss Whedon giving direction to Hawkeye himself, Jeremy Renner, who said just recently he might show up in the forthcoming Captain America 3. You can check out the image below.

"It's more epic and in other ways it's more noirish and suspect and devious and specific," said Whedon of the sequel. "Ultron, he's got a touch of the apocalypse in him."

Opening in theaters on May 1, 2015, the highly-anticipated sequel also stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, James Spader, Cobie Smulders, Thomas Kretschmann and Paul Bettany.

(courtesy of Empire Magazine)

This photo is really cool. First off it's cool to see Joss Whedon in action directing the movie. Secondly Hawkeye's new outfit looks great and it's good to see him in action and hopefully he gets a little bit more screen time than he did in the last film.

Guy Ritchie appears to have found his King Arthur. Deadline reports that Pacific Rim and "Sons of Anarchy" star Charlie Hunnam is final negotiations for the leading role in the upcoming project, which hopes to launch a multi-film franchise. Variety, meanwhile, reports that Godzilla star Elizabeth Olsen is in talks for the female lead. Hunnam would join his Pacific Rim co-star Idris Elba, who was recently cast as a Merlin-like figure who trains and mentors Arthur. King Arthur is set for release on July 22, 2016.

This is really great casting. Charlie Hunnam is one of the best and brightest young talents in the buisness and working with Guy Ritchie will help his career a lot. Plus seeing Hunnam and Elba on screen togehter will be pretty cool too.

A big screen return for the Underworld franchise is in the works. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Lakeshore Entertainment is developing an Underworld reboot and has hired Priest scribe Cory Goodman to pen the screenplay. Underworld, directed by Len Wiseman, was released in 2003 and follows the adventures of Kate Beckinsale's Selene, a vampire "Death Dealer" caught in the war between vampires and Lycans. It was followed by three big screen sequels, Underworld: Evolution in 2006, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans in 2009 and Underworld: Awakening in 2012.

This is very interesting. Now I will say that I'm not the biggest fan of the franchise, but it has had some success so I'm not surprised there is another film on the way. However I am surprised that it'll be a reboot so soon after the last film. Maybe the studio feels that this is the best option. I personally feel that you either make a sequel or just stop the franchise completely.

An offbeat comedy about a young wannabe musician, Jon (played by Domhnall Gleeson), who finds himself out of his depth when he joins an avant-garde pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank (played by Michael Fassbender), a musical genius who hides himself inside a large fake head, and his terrifying bandmate Clara (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal).

I actually really enjoyed this film. It has a lot of quirky drak comedy and every joke hits home. There are a lot of really dark parts to the film and it really helps balance the tone of the film. The performances in the film are spectacular particularly with Maggie Gyllenhaal and Domhnall Gleeson. But the man that steals the show is Michael Fassbender who despite of not taking the mask off the entire film (while creepy) gives a magnificent performance. The film suffers from a very short runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes and it really could have went just a little bit longer. Overall the film is quirky and its a surprising hit. I give Frank a 9.5 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Frank, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

My Review of When the Game Stands Tall

So I recently watched When the Game Stands Tall and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

When the Game Stands Tall poster.jpg

When The Game Stands Tall tells the remarkable journey of legendary football coach Bob Ladouceur (played by Jim Caviezel), who took the De La Salle High School Spartans from obscurity to a 151-game winning streak that shattered all records for any American sport. When the streak is broken, and tragedy strikes the team, Coach Lad must teach his players - and the entire town - that it's not about how you fall, but how you get back up.

This movie was really disappointing. Now as you all know I love sports movies (in general football movies) and how they inspire people to be better people and to encourage them that they can do great things. This film does that but in the over-the-top in your face way. The film is way to emotional and focuses more o people's personal lives and it cares less about the football aspect. If the filmmakers had balanced that out then the film could have been great. Now I will say that in the scenes in which football is going on the film dleivers some of the best on-screen football action of all-time. Jim Caviezel and Laura Dern do give great performances in a lesss than stellar film. Overall the film is way to over-the-top for its own good. I give When the Game Stands Tall a 2 out of 10.

8-25-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Chris Hemsworth ("Thor" movies, upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Charlie Day ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," upcoming Horrible Bosses 2) are joining New Line Cinema and Warner Bros.' Vacation reboot, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Ed Helms will play Rusty Griswold in the comedy, while Christina Applegate will appear as his wife. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo are set to make cameos. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein wrote the script and are making their directorial debut. The new version of the vacation adventures of the quirky dad and his family will follow Rusty, who now has his own family misadventures on the road.

Hemsworth will reportedly play the husband of Rusty’s sister, Audrey (a role that has not been cast), while Day is expected to cameo as a river rafting guide. Chris Bender, David Dobkin, Jeff Kleeman are producing. Filming is scheduled to start in September.

I think that this is excellent casting. We all already know how funny Charlie Day is (from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), but it'll be interesting to see Chris Hemsworth do a comedy. I'm a huge fan of the Vacation franchise and I can't wait to see how far the characters have come since the last film.

If there's one "Avengers" character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that hasn't gotten his fair share in the spotlight just yet, it's Hawkeye. Though he was introduced in 2011's Thor, was mostly mind-controlled in 2012's The Avengers, and will appear in next year's Avengers: Age of Ultron, Barton hasn't had the same exposure as some of the other characters. That could change in 2016, however, as actor Jeremy Renner says he might show up in the upcoming Captain America 3.

Speaking with Collider, Renner was asked about this upcoming schedule and revealed he might have to free up some time next year for the third "Cap" film. "There are rumblings of Captain America 3. I don't know what's going to happen there. I've got to find the time, man (laughs). I'm trying to stay home and I can't."

Following this initial story, SuperHeroHype spoke with returning directors Anthony and Joe Russo this afternoon about the potential for Hawkeye's includion, and whether it was something they could talk about.
"Unfortunately we can't (comment)," Anthony said, "It's too specific to what the movie may be." Joe did chime in and teased, "There are certainly characters that Cap is close to or has a strong relationship with that would make sense appearing in his films. I think that's all we can say about it."

This is really great to hear. I really do like the character of Hawkeye and he has been vastly underused. Hopefully he'll have a big role in Cap 3 and help boost his status like Cap 2 did with Scarlett Johansson and Black Widow.

Director Ridley Scott is as busy as ever with his next effort Exodus: Gods and Kings hitting theaters on December 14 of this year and his next film The Martian, starring Matt Damon, set for release on November 25, 2015. Beyond that, he's got two highly-anticipated sequels in the pipeline: Blade Runner 2 and Prometheus 2. Speaking with EW, the director opened up about both films, revealing that the script for the Blade Runner sequel has been completed and which he might tackle first. "It's written and it's damn good," Scott says of the Blade Runner sequel. "Of course it involves Harrison, who is a survivor after all these years - despite the accident (referring to Ford's "Star Wars" injury). So yes, that will happen."

Scott went on to reveal that he could direct the Blade Runner sequel after The Martian, though that leaves very little time for Prometheus 2, currently set for release on March 4, 2016. "That’s the problem, I've got a lot of ducks in a row. But they're all written."

This is awesome to hear. Now we have to take it with a grain of salt simply because it's all talk and no action. Until we see the film go under production then as of now it's not happening. I really do hope Blade Runner 2 gets made simply because I love Blade Runner and I've been dying for a sequel for a really long time.

Following yesterday's unfortunate announcement of the passing of Lord Richard Attenborough, Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow has taken to Twitter to celebrate the actor with the below image of a statue dedicated to Attenborough's John Hammond, presumably from the set of the new film.

        "In memoriam," Trevorrow writes.

Opening in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters on June 12, 2015, Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D'Onofrio, BD Wong, Omar Sy, Judy Greer, Katie McGrath, Lauren Lapkus and Andy Buckley. Jurassic World is a sci-fi terror adventure set 22 years after the horrific events of the original Jurassic Park.

This is a really great gesture. The character of John Hammond is iconic and Richard Attenborough did and amazing in the role. Hopefully this statue is in the new film simply to pay tribute to John Hammond for creating Jurassic Park.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Smashed, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) has taken a leading role opposite John Goodman in director Dan Trachtenberg's upcoming microbudget thriller, The Cellar (formerly Valencia), Variety reports. The Cellar was originally scripted by Josh Campbell and Matt Steucken with Dan Casey having recently provided a rewrite. It follows a girl who, after losing consciousness in a car accident, wakes up in an underground cellar with a man who tells her that the outside world has perished in a nuclear attack.

Trachtenberg, best known for his short fan film Portal: No Escape, was also named last year as the director of New Line's planned adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra's acclaimed comic book series Y: The Last Man. That project has not, as of yet, shown any quantifiable progress with Vaughn having recently suggested that there's a very good chance the rights will ultimately revert back to him and Guerra.

This is pretty good casting. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an underrated actress in my opinion and this film could show her chops. It'll also be great to see her star opposite John Goodman.
