Weekend Movie News 7-11-14 to 7-13-14

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Several months before The Amazing Spider-Man 2 even opened in theaters, Sony enlisted writers Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner to write the screenplay for The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Between now and then writers Kurtzman and Orci had an amicable split with Orci going to focus on the "Star Trek" series while Kurtzman was putting his efforts into the proposed Venom spin-off film.

Now, speaking with IGN, Orci revealed that not only is he no longer officially involved in scripting The Amazing Spider-Man 3 but he's also unaware of Sony's plans for the future of the franchise. "I don't know what their plans are for that franchise," Orci said. "I don't ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie. I've read probably as much as anyone else. There's a love for the Sinister Six, the idea of Venom — there's an idea of Spider-Man's going to be one of these characters that's part of our business. He's such a popular character. Spider-Man's not going to go away any time soon. When it all happens and how and all that has yet to be determined."

Currently, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is set for release on June 10, 2016 with Venom and The Sinister Six spin-offs also in the pipeline. The most recent entry in the franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is set for release on DVD and Blu-ray on August 19.

This is actually not that surprising. I mean Roberto Orci is currently working on the Star Trek 3 script and he's also directing the film, so he's got his hands full. Plus I'm kind of glad he won''t be back. Most of you know that I didn't like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (which Orci wrote) and I thought the script was weak and confusing. Hopefully Sony can find a new writer for the film quickly.

In case you didn't think it was already a given, Ant-Man star Michael Douglas went on "The Late Show with David Letterman" to talk very briefly about the upcoming film and to confirm that they'll be present for Marvel Studios' panel at the San Diego Comic-Con. Check it out below.

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Also starring Evangeline Lilly, David Dastmalchian, Patrick Wilson and Corey Stoll, Ant-Man will be directed by Peyton Reed and is scheduled for release on July 17, 2015.

This is really interesting to hear. From what I had heard, Marvel had decided to not bring Ant-Man to Comic-Con. But I think it's great idea simply because Marvel won't get the chance to bring it to next years Comic-Con due to Ant-Man's release date of July 17,2015 which will come out around the time of the 2015 Comic-Con. Hopefully they surprise us and they bring it to this year's Comic-Con.

Every time that director Guillermo del Toro is linked to a new project, which is often, fans will be the first to ask why he chose that project over completing his trilogy and making Hellboy 3. While taking part in a Reddit AMA, the director was asked this very question and provided a sobering answer for fans anticipating the final chapter.

"Well, you know, we don’t have that movie on the horizon," he wrote. "But the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film. He has to become the beast of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It's a very interesting ending to the series, but I don’t think it will happen."

Del Toro later added: "I think that the first movie made its budget back, and a little bit of profit, but then it was very very big on video and DVD. The story repeated itself with the second already, it made its money back at the box office, but a small margin of profit in the release of the theatrical print, but was very very big on DVD and video. Sadly now from a business point of view all the studios know is that you don't have that safety net of the DVD and video, so they view the project as dangerous….Creatively, I would love to make it. Creatively. But it is proven almost impossible to finance. Not from MY side, but from the studio side. If I was a multimillionaire, I would finance it myself, but I spend all my money on rubber monsters."

The first film in the series was released in 2004 and grossed just under $100 million at the global box office. Its sequel, which hit theaters just a week before Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, grossed over $160 million at the global box office.

I think this news has broken my heart more than any other girl could ever dream of. I was really looking forward to seeing Del Toro finishing what he started and give us an epic Hellboy 3. I really hope that Universal can see that everyone wants a Hellboy 3 and actually put money behind the film.

Speaking of Guillermo del Toro, he is always a man with several projects in the works and Guillermo del Toro has a busy upcoming slate. 2015 will see the release of his latest, Crimson Peak, and we learned just this week that he plans to direct a small-scale black and white film before beginning work on Pacific Rim 2. That's all in addition to his new series, "The Strain," which premieres this weekend. As part of the promotion of that new series, del Toro took to Reddit for an AMA and offered an update on a project we haven't heard much about in a while: Walt Disney Pictures' The Haunted Mansion. Two weeks ago, I went back to Disneyland with the executives with whom I am developing the screenplay," says del Toro. "It's a hard screenplay to crack. We've done it a few times. We are on our third or fourth draft, with 2 different writing teams, and I think the main thing is to try to combine everything that is great about the ride into the movie, and to make it a really intense but with a sense of fun - just like the ride."

The Haunted Mansion was originally announced for the big screen at Comic-Con back in 2010. Del Toro is attached as a producer, but he doesn't rule out the possibility of directing."It is a movie I would love to direct," he says, "but I would be happy to just produce it if the timing is not right." The film is said to be built around the theme park attraction's Hatbox Ghost and it sounds like del Toro regular Doug Jones is the frontrunner for the part."We have developed 50-60 pieces of art," he continues. "We've developed maquettes of the Hat Box Ghost, over the body and face of Doug Jones, but we have not succeeded yet in cracking the screenplay. I have to believe that Disney will make this movie as soon as we crack the screenplay, but until then we cannot tackle it... We always feel like we are very close, but not yet."

This is really bad news. I love Del Toro and all he does, but this isn't good for him. I mean when a studio has asked you to direct a film and you haven't even finished let alone start it in 4 years. I feel that Disney probably needs to move on to another director. Now I do understand that Del Toro has had a busy schedule but it still doesn't give him a free pass to not finish the script.

Director Breck Eisner's upcoming supernatural actioner, The Last Witch Hunter, has found another lead in "Game of Thrones" star Rose Leslie. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Leslie, best known for playing Ygritte on the HBO series, will star opposite Vin Diesel in the big screen feature. In The Last Witch Hunter, an immortal witch hunter (Diesel) partners with his natural enemy, a female witch (Leslie), to stop the covens of NYC from unleashing a plague on humanity.

This is great casting. Now let me say that I am not a fan of Game of Thrones (sorry I've tried but it's just not for me), but I have heard that this actress is absolutely awesome on the show and her looks make her perfect for the role. I know looks don't mean everything but the role that she is in needs a certain look and this woman has it.
