Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...
(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)
Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings has been receiving a huge push in the last week with Entertainment Weekly debuting the first pictures, new character posters and the first trailer to premiere later this week. The filmmaker seems to have been bitten by the biblical bug as it's being reported that his company Scott Free is teaming with 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment (who co-produced Exodus) for a big screen epic based on the Old Testament hero King David.
The untitled biblical movie will be written by Jonathan Stokes and it will follow David in his time as King of Israel after the slaying of Goliath. Because Scott is already developing three other movies--a sequel to Prometheus, The Martian and another about football concussions--it's doubtful he will direct it.
Exodus, which is scheduled for release on December 20, follows a series of successful biblical movies including Darren Aronofsky's Noah, starring Russell Crowe, which has grossed $350 million worldwide, and Fox's Son of God.
I really like hearing this news. It's great to see Hollywood going back to biblical epics like it did in the 1950's. It'll also be great to see King David's story on the big screen. Hopefully Exodus can continue the trend of successful bible based movies and maybe we'll get to see more of them.
In the past few years, Walt Disney Pictures has had great success with live action versions of their most popular animated features, most recently seen with Maleficent, which has grossed $600 million worldwide so far. Disney also has a live action Cinderella out early next year and Jon Favreau is developing a live action The Jungle Book.
Realizing what can be done with CG to create realistic animals (as seen in this week's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Disney are moving forward with a live action version of one of their beloved animated classics, Dumbo, hiring "Transformers" writer Ehren Kruger to write the adaptation.
Produced by Kruger with Justin Springer, the live action movie will have the same premise of a bashful elephant with inordinately large ears who goes on an adventure with a mouse after his mother is locked up after defending him. (SPOILER if you haven't seen the cartoon!) He eventually learns to fly using his ears with the help of a magic feather.
The film is likely to have a "strong family component," according to The Wrap, along the lines of some of the other Disney classics reinvented for modern audiences. For years, it was rumored that Disney were trying to bring the 1941 animated feature to Broadway as a musical but those plans seemed to have sputtered out with no recent word on that happening.
This is really interesting to hear. Disney has had success so far with live action takes on their animated classics and this one looks promising. I'm a huge fan of the original cartoon and it'll be interesting to see how the film will play out.
Production continues today on the set of J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII and Bad Robot has taken to Twitter with a sneak peak of an IMAX camera filming what is presumably going to double as the desert world of Tatooine. IMAX has, meanwhile, confirmed that their cameras are being used for the December 18, 2015 release, although it remains to be seen how much of the final film will be shot in the format.
Since it was revealed on Sunday that production has already wrapped in Abu Dhabi, there's a good chance that this image is at least a month old (or, potentially, part of a second unit shoot).
Star Wars: Episode VII is set to star Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong'o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke and Pip Anderson.
This is awesome to see. It's great to know that we'll get to see more of Tatooine in the new trilogy. Nobody knows how excited I am to see Star Wars back on the big screen. This movie will be awesome and I have complete faith in JJ Abrams.
Universal Pictures has had such huge success with the "Jason Bourne" series starring first Matt Damon and then Jeremy Renner, that it was only time before they went back to Bourne creator Robert Ludlum looking for more material. According to Variety, the studio has bought the rights to Ludlum's 2002 post-humous release The Janson Directive and are in early negotiations with Dwayne Johnson, once known as the professional wrestler "The Rock," to lead what they hope will be another franchise.
Johnson, who would also come on board as a producer, would play a special ops agent who leaves covert operations to go into business as a private security consultant, helping those in need along with a sharpshooter.
If the deal goes through, it would add another franchise to Johnson's belt following his huge success as part of the ensemble cast of Universal's popular "Fast and Furious" movies as well as joining "G.I. Joe" with 2013's G.I. Joe: Retaliation which Paramount already has someone writing a sequel to.
I'm actually pretty pumped to hear this. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has become one of the biggest action stars over the past 7 years and this film franchise appears to be in his wheelhouse. If this goes through and comes true then Johnson will officially be the biggest action star on the planet.
Filmmaker Kevin Smith has been using social media to get word out on his upcoming horror movie Tusk and today he debuted a teaser poster image while promising to debut the first trailer during his Hall H panel at Comic-Con on Saturday night. You can check out that poster image below. "Tusk" follows Wallace (Justin Long), a journalist on a mission. He finds the story of a lifetime in Mr. Howe (Michael Parks), a worldwide adventurer with amazing tales and a curious penchant for walruses. So far, Tusk doesn't have a release date set but it will be distributed by A24 after being financed by Demarest Films.
This is a pretty neat poster. This film also sounds really weird, fun and crazy. I'm a huge fan of Kevin Smith and this film is going to be very different then previous films from Smith and I think that the film will be awesome.
So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, which of these stories peaked your interest or was there another story that interested you? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
