My Top 10 Most Anticipated Films for the First Half of 2018

2017 was a phenomenal year in film and 2018 has a lot of great films that could potentially make 2018 even better. Now this list will comprise of films that will be released between January 1st, 2018 and June 30th, 2018. With that being said I'm going to bring you my top most anticipated films of the first half of 2018. So without further ado...

10. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom- June 22nd, Rating PG-13
Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom.png

Had The New Mutants not gotten moved to next year, this film wouldn't be in my top 10. Look I really enjoyed Jurassic World probably more than some critics, but I do admit that it did have a lot of flaws that really don't hold up even after almost three years. The trailer for this film felt pretty bland and it really didn't boost my excitement for it anymore than it already was. Colin Trevorrow isn't directing this film because he gave that opportunity up for Star Wars Episode IX, but he got fired from that so now he's just sitting on the sideline for now, but J. A. Bayona is behind the camera of this one and it does give me a little hope simply becasue of his previous films so hopefully something good will come out of this. It's going to be very interesting which direction the film goes in to help build upon the Jurassic Park/World lore.

9. Sicario 2: Soldado- June 29th, 2018 Rating: R

The first Sicario film was an absolutely outstanding film and the fact that it lended itself to have a sequel really shows just how could that film is. When you look at the first film, it does kinda end in w way where you would think a sequel is needed, but when you see that Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro are back you begin to see that their characters have so much more of a story to tell. Emily Blunt isn't back for the film which is perfect because I thought she was the weakest part of the first film and he story kinda had a nice ending and she doesn't need to be in this film. This is a film that isn't being directed by Denis Villeneuve, but it was wrote by Taylor Sheridan who also wrote the first film which gets me absolutely excited to see what direction he takes this film in.

8. Tomb Raider- - March 16th, 2018 Rating: PG-13

Ok so I know video game films are not that great and even what most consider the best one (Mortal Kombat) is still pretty terrible, but for some reason I think this film can be great. First off you have Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander in the lead role of Lara Croft so you know you could potentially get a great performance, but it is also based off of the new video games which is both equality awesome and gorgeous at the same time so there is a lot potential for this film. The film does however feel like it's going to follow the original films plot which kinda has me scared, but in this new generation it could possibly be done right.

7. Pacific Rim Uprising- March 23rd, 2018 Rating: PG-13

I absolutely loved the first film and the fact that the film was able to make just enough money to get a sequel truly shows how much people loved that film and it builds excitement for this film. Guillermo del Toro wrote and directed the first film and he decided to hand over the reigns to Steven DeKnight who is a very great writer making his directorial debut, but with his previous works, this is a perfect jumping off point for him. The cast that they were able to assemble for this film is stellar and it does a great job of replacing Idris Elba's character with his son in John Boyega and replacing Charlie Hunnam with Scott Eastwood. It's a film that has a lot of potential and could be a big surprise hit now that it has a lesser budget than the previous film making the success of the film more attainable.

6. Avengers: Infinity War- May 4th, 2018 Rating: PG-13

Some of you are probably are wondering why this film is so low on the list considering how big of a film this is going to be. It's simply because of the trailer and it really lowered my expectations. Before the trailer was released this film was probably at number 1, but the trailer left me underwhelmed and I want this film to be great so lowering my expectations will help me when I watch the film. This is the film comic book fans have been waiting for since 2008 when the MCU began and while we still have another film coming out next year, this is really going yo set the tone for the MCU going forward once the characters we've grown to love move on for the next generation to take over.

5. Solo: A Star Wars Story- May 25th, 2018 Rating: PG-13

Here is another film that you all probably thought would be higher mainly due to how much I love Star Wars, but much like Avengers: Infinity War, this film has a lot of reasons for being this low. The reason why this film is as low as it is is because of the productions issues that have surrounded the film with the firing of Phil Lord and Chris Miller just last summer and hurrying through production with Ron Howard behind the camera. This is going to be a film that really doesn't have a lot of major connections story wise to the overall saga Star Wars and it's really our first origin film in the saga and that is kinda scary when you look at it. I really do think this film is going to be great despite it's issues, but it wouldn't surprise me if the film ended up being a disappointment.

4. Deadpool 2- June 1st, 2018 Rating: R

If the first film was any indication of how funny and great R-Rated comic book films can be, then the sequel should be something to looked forward to. The first film was able to be serious and not take itself too seriously in the same film and Deadpool was the best character to do that with. It's a film that didn't lie to us when it said Cable was going to be in the film and putting him with Deadpool is probably one of the best ideas ever conceived. The first film was also kinda unexpected in how funny it was going to be but this film has a lot to live up to, but if the trailer is any indication then we are in for a treat and the marketing campaign is something I'm really looking forward to.

3. The Incredibles 2- June 15th, 2018 Rating: PG
The Incredibles 2.jpg

This might collectively be one of the most anticipated films of all-time. The first film is one of the best superhero films of all-time and the fact that it's animated makes it even more special. Some would say that it's the best Fantastic Four film we've ever had and that's hard to disagree with considering how bad the live-action Fantastic Four films have been. I'm also glad they were able to get virtually everyone back from the first film after all of these years and to even continue on with what was teased at the end of the first film. Animation has changed so much since the last film came out and I'm really interested to see where Pixar takes this film.

2. Black Panther- February 16th, 2018 Rating: PG-13

This is a film that comic book fans have been waiting for for a long time and the fact we are finally getting really gets me excited. Black Panther was one of the best parts of Captain America: Civil War and it's going to be interesting to see where this film takes his character and how it will grow the MCU. This is also our first African-American led superhero film since Blade: Trinity which came out back in 2004 so this is a big step for filmmaking heading forward. It's also great that Marvel is releasing this film in February which is also Black History Month making this a truly historic film in a lot of ways.

1. Ready Player One- March 30th, 2018 Rating: PG-13
Ready Player One (film).png

What more do you need than Stephen Spielberg directing a sci-fi film? Spielberg is the greatest director in the history of film and anytime he is directing something you pay attention to it and this film is just right up his alley. Virtual Reality is becoming bigger and bigger each and every day and now would be the perfect time to capitalize on the trend with a feature film. The book is simply amazing and there are a lot of pop culture references and figures throughout and while Warner Bros. doesn't have the rights to a lot of characters from the book, they could still make it work with changes to the story which really makes me interested to see which direction they take the story.
So ladies and gentlemen what are some of the movies you are looking forward to in the first half of 2018 and what do you think of my list? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
