1. Usually every year the big topic is who was snubbed and when you look at the nominations, there aren't that many snubs to really get upset about. Some could argue Jessica Chastain probably deserved a nomination over Meryl Streep in Best Actress and Patrick Stewart deserved one for Best Supporting Actor over Christopher Plummer. Outside of that I think The Academy pretty much got it right.
2. The biggest story coming out of these nominations is the fact that James Franco isn't in the Best Actor category. Throughout the award season James Franco got a lot of buzz and even won several awards that would normally lead to an Oscar nomination, However he's been apart of recent allegations dealing with sexual misconduct and that honestly probably had a part in not getting a nomination. My honest opinion is that if the Academy is willing to nominate and even reward a known rapist in Roman Polanski back in 2002 for The Pianst and even Casey Affleck last year (who I was rooting for to win) who had been accused of sexual harassment, how you can you not do the same thing for Franco. Look I know it's tough to talk about it,but often times you need to separate the craft from the personal life and reward someone for their hard work. It would've been interesting to see how much buzz this years Oscars could've gotten with Franco's nomination with him on the read carpet and even when he is introduced as one of the nominees.
3. The Academy is completely head over heels for The Shape of Water as it garnered 13 nominations which is one short of tying the record for most nominations of all-time with three films (Titanic, All About Eve and La La Land). Unlike La La Land last year, let's hope The Shape of Water can break the record for most wins at the Oscars which is 11.
4. Comic book movies don't often get recognition from The Academy in the big 8 awards (Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay), but Logan was able to garner only the second ever nomination for one of those 8 (the last being Heath Ledger winning for Best Supporting Actor in 2008) and it has a really good shot to bring home the award, but it will face a lot of great competition.
5. Much like last year, this year has a lot of predictable categories, but this is possibly the most wide open Best Picture race I've seen since I've been covering The Oscars and it's going to make for an interesting watch come March 4th.
