My Review of Ghost in the Shell

So I recently watched Ghost in the Shell and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

In the near future, Major (played by Scarlett Johansson) is the first of her kind: a human who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people's minds and control them, Major is uniquely qualified to stop it. As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major discovers that her life was stolen instead of saved. Now, she will stop at nothing to recover her past while punishing those who did this to her.

This film is just a complete mess from beginning to end. Anime to live-action is one of the harder things to do simply because there are certain things you can get away with in animation that you can't get away with in live-action. One thing is the story where you go as crazy and as campy as you want to and be given a free pass because you are a cartoon, but when you bring that to the big screen you have to be very careful with how you present the material and the filmmakers weren't with this film. The story itself is interesting, but it just doesn't feel like this is something you needed to bring to the big screen. It's packed with a lot of information and several pieces of that information are glossed over and not fully explained which left several questions unanswered. Had the film been like a miniseries, then it would've had a lot more success. Visually the film is stunning and they do capture the Japanese culture very well and while most of the cityscapes are CGI, they do look realistic enough. While the character Scarlett Johansson is playing is originally Japanese, the orientation change of the character isn't at distracting as it could've been and she does give a very good performance, but the film around her just isn't that great. Overall if you are a fan of the original source material, then you'll like this film more than others, but if not then this isn't the film for you unless you want to watch Scarlett Johansson in a near naked skin-tight body suit. I give Ghost in the Shell a 4 out of 10.
