My Review of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Non-Spoiler Review)

So I recently watched Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

This film is really fun and very action packed. Now just to go ahead and get this out of the way, this film is not a continuation of the episodic films and instead takes place before Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. With that out of the way, this film is an insanely fun time at the movies and if you are a Star Wars fan then this is a film you definitely need to see and there are a lot of little nods to the other films placed perfectly throughout to make it feel apart of the universe. Gareth Edwards does a great job of building this universe even more and really expanding on the mythology behind everything. He's able to create characters and storylines that develop very slowly and methodically which ultimately pay off in the end. Action is all over the place in the film and there's really never a dull moment when it comes to those scenes and this is easily the most violent Star Wars films you will ever see and hats off to Kathleen Kennedy and Bob Iger for allowing the filmmakers to be able to go that extra little step to help serve the story better. Performance wise there are a lot of good ones and they really help create these new characters that we've never seen before. Felicity Jones was the perfect choice for Jyn Erso and to see where her character starts off at to where she finishes might be the best development in a character this year. Both Diego Luna and Riz Ahmed are great as well and to see there development throughout the film is impressive and it's a credit to their acting abilities.

The one performance however that really stands out among the rest is Ben Mendelsohn as Director Orson Krennic and he just delivers a really great villain where he does things that you want to hate him for, but at certain parts you almost feel sorry for him and to be able to do that takes a tremendous effort and talent and Mendelsohn does and has that. One thing that stood out in the marketing campaign was Darth Vader and as most of you know by reading various headlines he's barely in it which is a smart thing becasue you don't need him to really help carry the film. However, when Vader is on screen you shut up and pay attention because his scenes (while limited) are the most impactful and the most powerful and we get the old school Vader we are used to seeing and not the whiny little one from the prequels. As mentioned before the action scenes are incredible and when you have the cinematographer from Zero Dark Thirty on board you expect good action scenes and they are just so glorious and beautiful and were done very well. The comedy in Star Wars is all about timing and being very subtle and in this film you get that mainly with the character K2-SO played by Alan Tudyk who he himself has great comedic timing and it really rubs off onto this character. There aren't many problems with the film, but the few that are present do stick out pretty bad. One of the biggest problems with the film is that the second act is really slow and tough to get through and it felt like the material being presented was just fluff and filler material just to get you by up until the action packed third act which is a massive wake up call to get your attention. Overall this was a brilliant effort by all of those involved to help give us a story we never knew and everything works to perfection other than the second act of the film, but everything ultimately pays off for a fantastic film. I give Rouge One: A Star Wars Story a 9.5 out of 10.
