With The Disaster Artist set to hit theaters this weekend, I thought it would be appropriate to review the film in which the book and film are based upon... The Room. So without further ado...
A successful banker's (played by Tommy Wiseau) fiancee (played by Juliette Danielle) tempts and manipulates his best friend (played by Greg Sestero).
This has to be one of the top 5 worst films ever made, but surprisingly a lot of redeeming qualities. Now that statement is probably not one you would expect when you see the best worst film ever made, but when you sit down and watch you can find some good things about it. Now if you watch this film as a critic or someone who analyzes every aspect of a film then yes this film is absolutely dreadful, however if you watch this and treat it like a comedy, then you'll enjoy the film a little. The performances are dreadful from everyone involved, but if you've read the book (like me) you'll know that some really tried and failed or some just didn't care much at all for some of the scenes they are in. The story makes absolutely no sense and a lot of scenes that are in the film don't connect at all to the overall plot of the film or some things are mentioned in the film but don't have an impact on story or just aren't mentioned at all the rest of the film. The way scenes are shot and and how each look and feel just doesn't sit well and the way buildings in San Francisco are shown after each scene (or close to it) and how non of them matter and it just gives you those shots. The dialogue is absolutely atrocious and a lot of the lines are just so cheesy that none of them would ever be spoken by people in real life situations. In spite of all that, there are a lot of funny moments throughout the film that weren't intentional made to be funny, but you realize how ridiculous each scene and you can't help but laugh. As mentioned with the scenes that don't make sense you often have Tommy Wiseau laugh in uncomfortable situations or just laughs in every scene because he feels like it. This film however does offer us a lot of memorable bad dialogue and a lot of memorable scenes that have often been made fun of in either a gif or meme that has withstood the test of time and the fact that this film came out 14 years ago is really hard to believe, but is has one of the bigger cult followings for a film and hopefully its legacy will carry on forever. Overall this is an insanely horrible film with so many flaws that it's hard to believe a film like this was made, but that goes back to the passion of Tommy Wiseau who wanted to make this film at any cost and he in the end has the last laugh. I give The Room a 1 out of 10.
So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of The Room, what would you rate it, are you excited for The Disaster Artist and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
