Well ladies and gentlemen that was quick. Just last week we heard the announcement that Colin Trevorrow and Lucasfilm agreed to part ways on him directing Star Wars Episode IX and you can see my list of people who I would've like to have seen direct here, but earlier this week his replacement was announced. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams was announced as the director of Star Wars Episode IX. When I first heard the announcement I was actually a little upset with the choice mainly due to the fact that in my other article, one reason why I wouldn't want Rian Johnson to return is becasue fans complained that George Lucas should've never have directed all three of the prequels and it led to very stale story on a creative level and doing that in this trilogy could do it harm and that's why I'm not a fan of the choice. Now that I've had a couple of days to think about it, here are some of my thoughts.
Look I know some people hate The Force Awakens and I completely get the criticisms of the film and there were a lot of safe choices to be made. But what he set up with the new characters really is intriguing and one thing I'm looking forward to in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi and seeing how Rian Johnson was able to continue to build upon what came before him. There is the key phrase though "build upon what has come before" and with selecting J.J. Abrams I feel that we might be on the downward trend instead of going up. Now that is saying a lot considering I've not seen Episode VIII, but from everything I've heard, Rian Johnson knocked it out of the park so I'm scared to see what happens with Abrams back at the helm for Episode IX. It's also no secret that on the filming of Episode VII, J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy did not get along for some parts of it and when looking at the recent history of the past few films, Kennedy has had problems with everyone, but Rian Johnson so hopefully, Abrams and Kennedy have sorted things out to help make Episode IX a great film and conclusion to this trilogy.
Getting some one new to direct like a Brad Bird or Denis Villeneuve would've helped get a fresh take on the trilogy building upon what Johnson and Abrams did before, but now with Abrams directing, hopefully in the next trilogy we can one of the aforementioned names or someone else to lead us into a new story. One thing that is hopeful for me is that a guy like Chris Terrio is writing the film in collaboration with Abrams and getting a writer of that caliber is something you can tip your hat to Lucasfilm. The one thing that scares me the most about Abrams directing is the fact that he played it safe in the Episode VII because he had to and if you look at his previous entries he does a great job of building a universe and coming up with great ideas, but he doesn't know how to finish them off. An example would be Star Trek (2009), he came up with great ideas and leading into a second film someone else should've came in a built upon it and instead Abrams was at the helm and Star trek Into Darkness was no where near as good as Star Trek and then Justin Lin directed Star Trek Beyond and did a really great job with it. If Abrams tries to use anything from Return of the Jedi or any other original trilogy film as a key plot point, then it will be all out chaos.
In conclusion, I'm rooting for J.J. Abrams to make the best film possible and hoping that he can move the story forward and close out this trilogy in a memorable way, but if he thought there was a lot of pressure on him to deliver a good film for Episode VII, the pressure is even more intense leading into Episode IX.
So ladies and gentlemen what do you think of J.J. Abrams directing Star Wars Episode IX and do you think he was the right choice? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
