My Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

        So I recently watched Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...







        After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes (played by Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (played by Woody Harrelson), the town's revered chief of police. When his second-in-command, Officer Dixon (played by Sam Rockwell) -- an immature mother's boy with a penchant for violence -- gets involved, the battle is only exacerbated.

     

        This is one of the darker films of the year. What makes the film so dark is that it uses a very uncensored style of humor during several serious moments that help you connect with each character and nobody in the film has any filters when it comes to saying what they want to say. Some of the things people say in the film are shocking and often funny, but some of it goes a little too far and seems unrealistic that a person would say those types of things to people in public. The performances are absolutely stellar in every sense of the word and the main standout is Frances McDormand and she just brings such a get on screen presence to the film and gives what could be her best performance of her career and this could easily win her another Oscar. Both Woody Harrellson and Sam Rockwell are also great in the film as well and they just play their respective characters so well and bring them so much life. Story wise there are some things that you'd expect to see in a film like this, but it does a good job of throwing curve balls at you to keep you off the pace in trying to figure out how the film ends. There are some scenes in the film that will make you cringe both in a good and bad way simply because of how they are executed and what happens within those scenes. Another great thing about the film is that it does relate to some people in the real world in the sense that there are certain situations in which people have actually gone through which will help them connect more with the film and its characters. Overall this is a really solid film with a terrific ensemble that has some of the great collection of performances of the year and while the humor is great some of it does go too far and it makes you feel uncomfortable. I give Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri a 9 out of 10.

My Review of Call Me By You Name

        So I recently watched Call Me by Your Name and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...







        It's the summer of 1983, and precocious 17-year-old Elio Perlman (played by Timothée Chalamet) is spending the days with his family at their 17th-century villa in Lombardy, Italy. He soon meets Oliver (played by Armie Hammer), a handsome doctoral student who's working as an intern for Elio's father (played by Michael Stuhlbarg). Amid the sun-drenched splendor of their surroundings, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever.

     

        This is one of the emotional gut-wrenching films of the year. The main base of the film is about relationships and you see how Elio's relationships with various people in his life impact him each and every day. It's a film that takes a lot of chances when it comes to what it shows in the relationship between Elio and Oliver and at moments you begin to feel the love they share for one another. Now granted this is homosexual relationship, but there are moments where if you're in a heterosexual relationship or whatever type of sexual relationship you are, you at some point have felt the same way these two have when it comes to your true love. That's something a lot of films are afraid to show and do it in a way to where it relates to everyone no matter what your sexuality is. The performances are just tremendous and the three main actors all deserve Oscar nomination consideration and if it weren't a slightly crowded field, they might've been considered frontrunners. It's a film that can hit your heart pretty hard with emotions because some people have been in certain situations the characters get into with significant others and the possibility of spending their whole lives together or that one true love slipping away through your fingers. The main problem with the film is that it does begin to get repetitive in plot points and the story isn't too new and it's a premise that has been shown before, but there are enough differences to help the film stand out from the rest. Overall this is a film that really shows what true love can be and we should treat each other and it does get emotional at times although it does have a lot of plot points that have been done before and it just takes away from the originality. I give Call Me by Your Name a 9 out of 10.

My Review of Wonder

        So I recently watched Wonder and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado..........







        Based on the New York Times bestseller, Wonder tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman (played by Jacob Tremblay), a boy with facial differences who enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time.

     

        This is one of the more heartbreaking films you will see this year. Anytime you tackle a film that has a disease as the main problem for a character, you almost have to tread a certain way to were you're not just bringing a disease to people for them to see it and raise awareness, but you have to make a film as well and the filmmakers did a terrific job in doing both. One thing you need is strong performances that are able to grip you emotionally and Jacob Tremblay does in every sense of the word and while he got snubbed for a nomination for his performance in Room, he deserves one for this film. Also both Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts give great performances although their chemistry doesn't work when they are screen together. One of the big things are the emotional moments and some of them are just absolutely gut-wrenching when you see what this little boy goes through on a daily basis. However some of the emotional moments are just there to be there without any context given to them. A big credit goes out to the Makeup department for their work in this film and making Tremblay absolutely unrecognizable in this role and when you can do that to a star actor like that, your work needs to be commended. As mentioned earlier, in a film like this you often bring attention to a disease not many people are familiar with, but one thing the film fails to do is to show August (or Auggie in the film) interacting with other kids like him and really just that interaction and the bouncing the knowledge of each other on how to handle situations really would give a sense of more hope to Auggie. Overall the film emotional in a it's story and several different moments throughout the film that are built up even more by stellar performances, however some scenes are just emotional to be emotional, some characters have no chemistry and it misses out on a few opportunities to see how the disease effects other people and not just singling out one particular case. I give Wonder an 8.5 out of 10.
